What causes acne?

Acne is a skin condition that is caused when the hair follicles and the pores of your skin are blocked by the build up of oil, dead skin, and sweat from your skin.

Each pore of the skin contains a hair follicle and a sebaceous gland. The sebaceous glands are known for creating and secreting sebum (an oily substance fill with fats, or lipids, from the human body). Sebum is released onto the skin for protection and hydration of the skin and hair follicles. The sebum is also responsible for delivery necessary antioxidants for the skin.

Overproduction of sebum or excess buildup of dirt on the skin will clog the pores of the skin. With the bacteria and the oil lingering on the skin, it leads to inflammation in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, etc.

1. Clean and change your bedding weekly – especially pillowcases!

I have two important matters that I need to address when it comes to this particular subject. First, it is essential to cleanse your face and do your skin care routine nightly before you go to bed. Nobody would like the dirt from the face collecting on to the pillows that will lead to inflammation of acne.

Secondly, you need to change change your bedding, especially pillowcases, periodically. While you might be going to bed with a clean face the grease from your hair on your pillow can lead to a breakout as well.

2. Clean everything that touches your face

Regularly clean surfaces that come into contact with your face, which includes make-up brushes, towels, etc. Most importantly, this includes making contact with your hands. Since you come into contact with everyday objects, it is essential for you to wash your hands before you touch your face. Do not touch your face with unclean hands or it can be guaranteed that a breakout will occur!

3. Take a shower right away after exercising

Exercising is essential to living a long and health lifestyle. Whenever one starts exercising, sweat and oils are released to cool the skin’s temperature. However, if the sweat is not removed, it can clog the pores of your skin. As a result, take a shower as soon as you exercise to prevent skin irritation and aggravation.

4. Take a look at your diet

Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness. An unhealthy body can’t support a healthy skin. Eating a healthy diet while avoiding certain processed foods will have your skin glowing naturally and prevents blemishes from occurring. The main point is that your skin will glow when your body is free from toxins.

5. Reduce stress, increase sleep

When we are stressed, our bodies enter a fight-or-flight response system and stress hormones are released into the body. The hormones cause the skin release more oil on the skin. If we are constantly stressed, it will lead to a buildup of excess oil and will cause a breakout of acne. Try to make lifestyle changes that will include breathing exercises, meditation, daily walks, yoga, and calming activities to cope with stress.  

 

There is no magical overnight cure for acne. To achieve the best results, it takes a combination of lifestyle changes along with a skin care routine  to see improvements in your skin, but consistency and patience is key for achieving clearer skin!
